Surfers Healing NC- Volunteer Descriptions
***volunteer registration usually opens last week of July**
Greeters
Meet families at shuttle drop-off to help carry their things and show them the way to registration. After lunch, help families off beach and to the shuttle pick-up stop. This is a VERY important position for you have the ability to set the mood for the family’s camp experience and ease their tension/fear.
Family Registration
Register all families and verify their surf times. Make sure they receive food ticket, wrist band, and goody bags. Ensure families know where to refill water bottles (Kinetico truck). Work with greeters and liaisons by asking families if they need extra assistance.
Family Liaison (looking for chair person)
Stationed at Family Registration. Responsible for offering one on one support to families in need to ensure there are an extra hands and eyes for “runners” or at risk children. We ask you stay with assigned family as closely as they feel comfortable. They may just need your assistance while getting settled in or during lunch time while gathering food and/or drinks.
Volunteer Registration
Make sure all volunteers have signed release form, know what they are doing and where they are going, and have wrist band.
Life Jacket Area
Help prepare campers for their surf experience (ease fear, fit for life jackets, etc.). This position must be filled with highly trained personnel familiar with autism but also familiar with how our particular camp runs.
Surfers Healing Merchandise
Work at Surfers Healing merchandise table. SH is a non-profit and relies on donations and merchandise sales to ensure the camps keep coming to families affected by autism absolutely free!
Children’s Area
You will help facilitate games and/or thank you cards with the families.
Trophy Area
You will be responsible for making sure each child participating in camp receives a trophy after surfing and has their picture taken.
Food Server
Help set up food area. Set up serving line and serve. Keep lines organized. Take care of leftovers and maintain sanitary conditions.
Board Caddy
In water helping children to and from boards, catching boards and/or surfers (as directed). MUST BE APPROVED BY WATER SAFETY TEAM FIRST!!! (Meeting before shift to be given directions)
Food Runners
Pick up donated food from various restaurants and deliver to the beach. Premier parking spots will be reserved for you. May have special last minute requests. There will be people to meet you at your car to carry food to beach.
Beach/Water Patrol
Keep surf area clear of anyone other than board caddies, Surfers Healing surfers or staff, and water safety by keeping everyone’s feet on DRY sand. The area between life jacket tent and water must be kept clear of spectators. You will also be responsible for ensuring life jackets return to life jacket tent in a timely manner so next group of campers can prepare for their surf time. MUST BE APPROVED BY WATER SAFETY TEAM FIRST!!!
Parking Lot
You will be responsible welcoming families and guiding cars into a suitable parking spot. This is a very important position (as is Greeter) because you have the potential to set the mood for the family’s camp experience and ease their tension/fear.
Set-up and Break-down
Help unload box truck and set-up tents and tables in the morning. Break-down tents and tables, carry to staging area (trail head ON beach), or carrying equipment from trail head to box truck.
Announcer tent
Help announcer keep up with surf time being called, write times on chalk board for families to see, and assist with getting lifejackets returned to lifejacket area in timely manner. You will also be responsible for notifying SH of any issues needing attention (generator, camper, and situations).
EVERYONE WITH AN AFTERNOON SHIFT IS ASKED TO HELP CLEAN THE BEACH.
WE LIKE TO LEAVE THE BEACH BETTER THAN WHEN WE ARRIVED!
THANK YOU
